About You

As a Barista at Java Blend, you should be passionate about coffee. You will learn all about our coffee processes, from roasting practices and quality control to extracting the best espresso shot and creating the perfect cup. Training will be provided on various barista techniques, safety measures, and store systems.

We believe that education of the whole coffee production process helps us appreciate the role each person plays in a single cup of coffee, from farmers to customers, and our JB team that exists in between. Therefore, it is essential for the Barista to be willing to learn about this process. We will walk you through every roast profile, the differences between each origin and process, our roasting schedules, packaging and shipping, café operations, and the ongoing relationships we have with our incredible coffee community.

By roasting and brewing each profile thoughtfully, we create delicious, consistent coffee experiences that are enjoyed by our community.

About the Position

Barista Responsibilities

  • Promotes coffee consumption by educating customers; selling coffee and coffee grinding and brewing equipment, accessories, and supplies; preparing and serving a variety of coffee drinks, along with pastries and cookies.
  • Welcomes customers by determining their coffee interests and needs.
  • Educates customers by presenting and explaining the coffee drink menu; answering questions.
  • Sells coffees and coffee grinding and brewing equipment by explaining differences in coffee beans and coffee preparation machines; demonstrating how brewing equipment operates.
  • Prepares and sells coffee drinks by following prescribed recipes and preparation techniques for coffee and espresso drinks.
  • Generates revenues by attracting new customers; defining new and expanded services and products.
  • Maintains inventories by replenishing coffee bean supply; stocking coffee brewing equipment; maintaining supplies, pastries, and cookies for coffee bar.
  • Keeps equipment operating by following operating instructions; troubleshooting breakdowns; maintaining supplies; performing preventive maintenance; calling for repairs.
  • Maintains safe and healthy work environment by following organization standards and sanitation regulations.
  • Updates job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities; reading coffee, retail trade, and food service publications; maintaining personal networks.
  • Enhances coffee shop reputation by accepting ownership for accomplishing new and different requests; exploring opportunities to add value to job accomplishments.

Education & Experience

  • High school diploma, GED, or equivalent preferred
  • Prior café or coffee shop experience a plus
  • Familiarity with telephone, office, and point-of-sale software

Physical Abilities

Rare : 1 to 45 minutes | Occasional : 45 minutes to 2.5 hours | Frequent : 2.5 to 5 hours | Continuous : 5 or more hours

  • Must be able to frequently lift and carry products weighing less than 5 lbs.
  • Will rarely need to lift and carry products weighing up to 50 lbs.
  • Occasional pushing and pulling of carts weighing 50 to 250 pounds using 5-10 lbs of force.
  • Frequent reaching to various levels and directions to grab ingredients to make product, move product to customers, and stock product on display shelves.
  • Possess dexterity for complex hand-eye tasks, including food and beverage preparation and merchandising.
  • Continuous standing, frequent walking, stooping, bending and twisting and occasional kneeling needed to stock product(s) on display racks.
  • Frequently required to read written documents.
  • Continuous needs to hear and verbally communicate in order to interact with and respond to management, staff, and customers.
  • Will need to hear requests in person and via telephone.
  • Will occasionally be exposed to solvents (cleaners, detergents), radiation ( Microwave in back room), continuously exposed to hot water, steam and frequently exposed to temperature fluctuations.
  • In addition to the above: May be required to drive to the bank to make deposits.
  • Will periodically need to drive to meetings or other stores for business purposes.
  • Will need to adjust work schedule to the needs of the business, including working some nights, weekends, holidays.
