 Location: 5146 Sackville st. Halifax, Nova Scotia
 Job Hours: Monday-Friday 6:30-5:30, Saturday and Sunday 7:30-5:30
 Schedule: 40 hours 
 Starting wage: $39000 plus monthly bonuses 
 Reports: Store manager                                                                   Directs: Shift supervisors, keyholders, Baristas

PURPOSE: The Assistant Store Manager (ASM) increases sales and profits by being responsible for the oversight of the day-to-day functions of the café, and the customer and staff experience.  This includes upholding company standards throughout all customer and staff areas of the store (inside and outside), remaining aware of customer and staff needs, and monitoring and ensuring fast, accurate and friendly service at the cash registers, on the café floor and at point of handoff.  The ASM’s supervision takes the form of side-by-side involvement in the work to observe, assess and coach performance, as well as to set the pace of work.  The ASM links their every action to productivity and business results. The ASM is guided by the Java Blend vision and Core Values.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Store Performance
  • Ensure store performance meets targets in sales, profit, production, and productivity based on annual performance expectations for the store.  Continually monitor and set the pace of work. Have awareness of company objectives and an understanding of local market potential. Has the ability to analyze key metrics and information, tie findings to observations and take appropriate action.  Inspect the sales floor for shop-ability and ensure productivity of staff & merchandise.

  • Leadership and Development
  • Lead, direct and supervise the work of the entire staff. Oversee Shift Supervisors in proactively planning staffing needs, recruiting, selecting and training staff at all levels.  Regularly observe, assess, interact, coach and counsel the team.  Regular interaction, training, coaching and counseling of staff.  Identify and develop high potential staff for all management positions through on-the-job, guided work.  Maintain a respectful values-driven workplace.  Use open communication tools and convert staff input into meaningful action. Address complaints and resolve issues consistent with our values, policies and procedures. Provide recognition and candid feedback.  Receive and relay business information, initiatives, expectations, priorities, etc.


  • Customer Service
  • Deliver a positive customer experience by setting the example for, as well as training and coaching customer service expectations, working with all members of management and staff to ensure execution.  Receive and respond to customer questions, requests and complaints.  Ensure a quick, accurate and positive experience for customers.   Actively engage with the customer by seeking first hand feedback to make improvements to all aspects of the café experience. Guide the staff in implementing the set-up of sales and marketing promotions & programs.

  • Staff Engagement
  • Maintain a respectful, values-driven workplace.  Use open communication tools, and convert staff input into meaningful action. Resolve staff issues in a manner consistent with Java Blend’s values, policies and procedures.  Capable of performing all duties required of staff. Provide recognition and candid feedback about performance and behaviors.

  • Loss Prevention and Safety
  • Protect company assets and information by ensuring their safe handling, security and integrity.  Proactively promote loss prevention awareness by upholding procedures and ensuring policies are in place.  Maintain a safe work environment through education, consistent follow up, ensuring policies and procedures are in place, and supporting the Joint Health and Safety Committee (JHSC).

  • Inventory Management
  • Making sure the café is equipped with everything the store needs at all times. That includes weekly food orders and adjustments. Ordering cups, lids etc.


  • Scheduling
  • Making sure schedules are out in a timely manner. SM will be the first point of contact for employees. SM ensures that scheduling meets all requirements for providing excellent customer service, safe staffing levels, and maintaining a profitable location. If additional staff is needed, it is SM responsibility to reach out to the DM with their staffing needs. SM will be responsible for interviews and hiring employees. 

    Responsible for the overall management and direction of all staff in accordance with Java Blebd’s policies and applicable laws. This includes implementing and administering company programs, policies and procedures.  Able to make decisions and take reasonable action in the absence of the Store Manager and/or corporate support to ensure successful store operation.  Leverages regional resources as appropriate. Perform any other task, function or responsibility as instructed by their immediate supervisor and/or manager of the Company.




    Education, Training and Experience: 

    • High School diploma; Post-Secondary degree/diploma preferred.
    • Strong mathematical and analytical skills.
    • Ability to communicate well in both verbal and written forms.
    • Ability to plan, organize, execute and manage the work of others.
    • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written and/or verbal form.
    • Ability to reason, make decisions, and use independent judgment in various situations.


    Physical Requirements:

    Rare:  1 to 45 minutes

    Occasional:  45 minutes to 2.5 hours

    Frequent:  2.5 to 5 hours

    Continuous:  5 or more hours

    • Must be able to frequently lift and carry products weighing less than 5 lbs. Will rarely need to lift and carry products weighing up to 50 lbs. Occasional pushing and pulling of carts weighing 50 to 250 pounds using 5-10 lbs of force.
    • Frequent reaching to various levels and directions to grab ingredients to make product, move product to customers, and stock product on display shelves.
    • Possess dexterity for complex hand-eye tasks, including food and beverage preparation and merchandising. 
    • Continuous standing, frequent walking, stooping, bending and twisting and occasional kneeling needed to stock product(s) on display racks.
    • Frequently required to read written documents.
    • Continuous needs to hear and verbally communicate in order to interact with and respond to management, staff, and customers.  Will need to hear requests in person and via telephone.
    • Will occasionally be exposed to solvents (cleaners, detergents), radiation (Microwave in back room), continuously exposed to hot water, steam and frequently exposed to temperature fluctuations.

    In addition to the above:

    • May be required to drive to the bank to make deposits. 
    • Will periodically need to drive to meetings or other stores for business purposes. 
    • Will need to adjust work schedule to the needs of the business, including working some nights, weekends, holidays.
